職歴

詳細

Baobab, Inc.

Translator and Localization Editor

2015/10~

My translation work with Baobab has covered everything from hotel booking websites (jalan.net) to cooking classes (www.abc-cooking.co.jp), as well as a large variety of smaller, one-time projects. My most recent project was the translation of natural Japanese conversations recorded from hospitality-industry phone calls. In addition to Japanese-to-English translation, I have also completed several proofreading and editing projects, verifying and improving the accuracy of machine and human translations, and ensuring consistency with the intended context and meaning.

Japan Exchange Teaching (JET) Programme

Assistant Language Teacher

2011/08~ 2016/08

I spent 5 years in a Japanese work environment, over which time I gained fluency and experience in communicating, planning, and organizing in Japanese.

Officially hired as an assistant language teacher (ALT) to work in a junior high school and preschool, my responsibilities grew far beyond that. I created and ran an adult English conversation class at the community center (which became popular enough to include additional classes for children), coached students in giving English speeches for national competitions, participated in and volunteered at town festivals, and organized events and trips.

In the classroom, I helped plan effective lessons, designed grammar worksheets and communication games, prepared students for high school exams and interviews, maintained an English bulletin board about international culture, tutored in English after school, and encouraged extracurricular communication in English via incentive programs and all-school games.

Connect Magazine

Head Editor

2013/04~ 2015/07

As head editor for a national publication, I was responsible for every aspect of Connect's direction, content, style, and promotion. In my first year as head editor, I introduced and carried out new features to offer new ways for the community to contribute such as polls, guest editorials, community spotlights, comics, and vox pop articles. I took what was already a large subscriber base (around 7,000 in 2013) and found ways to engage them and encourage them to promote the publication. This more than doubled our number of regular contributors, greatly expanded our nationwide network, and brought significant increases to our monthly readership (up 164%), subscriber base (up 20%), and overall views (up 198%). I took a publication that was read by a select group of people, redefined its image, brought its professional standard up, and expanded its reach to new audiences.

In addition to my overall directorial responsibilities, I also was directly involved in the production of the magazine itself. I actively sought new writers, edited grammar and content, contributed articles, set up interviews, assigned tasks, planned features, and worked on layout and graphical elements with our design team. As the magazine grew, I also created new positions in order to delegate tasks I had started myself, like mechanical editing and public relations so that they could flourish.

The Association for Japan Exchange and Teaching (AJET)

Online Publications Editor

2013/04~ 2015/07

As the Director of Online Publications for the AJET National Council I was primarily responsible for the management and publication of Connect magazine, as well as the editing and supervision of AJET's online correspondence. In addition, I served as a council member, offering input on national matters and working with other departments to organize events, promote services, construct surveys, write reports, and establish a connection with the foreign educator community inside and outside of Japan.

Proofit

Editor and Proofreader

2016/02~

As a proofreader for Proofit's online editing services, I receive user-submitted text and correct it for any errors in mechanics or usage. These submissions range from creative fiction to academic writings and business proposals. In addition to editing and correcting, I also proofread other editors' work to ensure and verify their accuracy.
