Career

Description

Cherry Blossom Design and Photography

Creative Director

2010/06~ 2016/12

I started this company to offer affordable design services to SMEs, NGOs and NPOs.

Clients include: Aidspan, APHRC, Kyuna Kindergarten, Le Collane Di Betta, Monika Rekhi, Salon Malibu and Waithira Chege.

With Aidspan I was the lead designer for their: MENA Report, 2014 Annual Report, and ASPAC Report.

The opportunities to have worked with a such a diverse range of clients has helped me develop not only as a designer/creative, but also as a team-leader, writer, public speaker and a salesperson (I found that I was especially rather talented in selling candles). I have also been allowed to sit in on meetings, discussions and/or shoots in the fields of fashion design to wildlife conservation, where I was once told that I have a natural talent for holding a reflector at the perfect angle.

Grand Forest Japan Hospital

English - Japanese Translator and Graphic Designer

2016/01~ 2016/10

Limited company with an affiliated NGO (Dream World Healthcare Programme) . Funded mostly by Suwa no Mori Hospital in Oita Prefecture, Japan.

In April 2016 we were finally able to open a diagnostic centre (Forest Japan Diagnostic Centre), which is the first phase of a 6 phase plan to improve the healthcare industry in Kenya.

My main responsibilities are translating Japanese documents into English.
Along with faithful/literal translations (official documents etc), I have also done semantic translation, particularly for workshop presentations, to make sure our staff understand within their own cultural context how Japanese culture works and is applicable to what the company is trying to achieve.
As an interpreter I have been part of meetings; acquiring property, inviting professionals to take part in one of the NGO projects, introductory meetings with potential partner NGOs, and staff meetings/workshops.

All documents and presentation material mentioned about, as well as marketing material were designed by me. The brand guidelines were also still a work in progress, which I helped steer onto a cleaner streamlined path.

When there is time I am also the English language teacher to the Japanese staff (A1 or A2).

DoDo World Ltd

Marketing Design Consultant

2014/04~ 2016/10

A travel agent established in 1976 with expertise in East Africa, and great knowledge about the rest of Africa.

I joined the team when the travel industry in the country was suffering from news about terrorist attacks and travel advisories.

The first task was to market Kenya as a luxury travel destination, which has been a slow success but client numbers have risen over the years.
We have also now turned our focus on the local market and are currently developing a plan to sell Japan as the next luxury shopping holiday destination.
