our study inspects the connection between the Turkish accession to the EU and the question of identities. In particular, the paper theoretically centers around whether the construction of Self/other has its effect on this process of accession. On contrast to other studies, which utilizes rational theories like the realist and liberalist with their "neo" forms, we believe that the political actors and elite discourse whether in Turkey or Europe are socially influenced by the historical narratives and the religious identities. Furthermore, we consider the construction of the East as the Europe's other. The paper aims to study the public perceptions and identifications with Europe and the EU, and within this broad framework, to analyze the elite discourse towards the Turkish accession. For this aim, we rely on the theory of the "Communicative action" of Habermas. Moreover, we aim to shed further light on contemporary debates on Turkish accession to the EU by putting them into the context of arguments regarding the connections between foreign policy and identity.
