As an online Business English teacher for Japanese professionals, I made it a point to familiarize myself with multiple aspects of Japanese culture. Just as with any position that I work at, I need to be able to find common ground between myself and my customers or students in this case. At this point, you might be wondering... If your job is to correct pronunciation and expanding vocabulary, then what's the point of doing extensive research on Japanese culture? The answer's simple, really... Whether I'm working with an advanced student, or a beginner, it will always help to have simple discussions with topics that my students are familiar with. This familiarity allows the students to express themselves more freely, and would give them an opportunity to share their insights on the matter, thus giving them more chances to practice conversing in English.
