Successfully held my internship as a part of the Mitacs-Accelerate program, where I worked under the direct supervision of Dr. Normal Buckley, the director of the centre and the chairman of the anesthesia department at McMaster University. The department of anesthesia was working with Adjuvant informatics (the industrial partner for the Mitacs program and a division of Med-Tel Software Ltd.). The aim of the project was to develop an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to support research and clinical care quality initiatives. I participated in the process of EMR planning, implementation and evaluation from many different viewpoints (training and introduction process for business support personnel and clinical personnel; melding the EMR into the clinical flow of patients; utility as pre-screening tool to facilitate clinical decision-making for triage and scheduling; performance of the EMR clinically and from an academic standpoint)
My duties included:
- Editing application and proposal to MITACS for internship funding
- Documents/Forms gathering from all the clinics participating in the project:
* Pain Management Centre, McMaster University (PMC)
* Chedoke Pain Management Unit (CPMU)
* Behavioural Medicine Centre (BMC)
- Conducted site visits to contact the staff in the three pain clinics to conduct the analysis questionnaires/surveys needed to complete the analysis
- Gathering all the contact information for all the staff participating in the project in all the clinics
- Developing an organizational hierarchy starting from the top management of the project down to the clinician level of every clinic
- Designing a Glossary for all the acronyms used in all the clinics
- Designing a website for the project, where all the previous information is published
