Professional Experience
As a former investment banker and research analyst at Morgan Stanley, I bring strengths in corporate finance and advisory. As the point person for Japan on key global initiatives and as a scholar of Japan since the early 90s, I bring cultural understanding and a diplomatic approach to boardroom discussions.
My interest in Japan stemmed from a three-month tour with Disney On Ice in 1993. I returned to Japan in 1999 with a Fulbright at Osaka University to research Japan's Pension Crisis. A few years later, I continued my research and won the 2004 Thesis Prize at the Lauder Institute for "Corporate Pension Reform in Japan: Big Bang or Big Bust?" As a Morgan Stanley equity research analyst, I co-authored reports with Japanese analysts on topics, such as pensions, leases, and ROE. As an investment banker, I worked closely with my colleagues in Tokyo to introduce concepts, such as ROIC, EVA, Future Growth Value, and drivers of ROE to our Japanese corporate clients.
