SECRETS WITH LOLO
Genre: Children’s Literature
Author: Dr. Luis P. Gatmaitan
Illustrator: Beth Parrocha-Doctolero
Publisher: OMF Literature Inc. (2001)
Intended Audience: Ages 8 and up
Summary
Peping was Lolo’s favorite. One day, Lolo arrived at Peping’s house. From that day on, Lolo stayed with Peping’s family for good. Peping and Lolo had fun times together. But the day came when Peping noticed certain things about Lolo – secrets that both kept from others. Peping felt so let down about the changes in Lolo. In the days that followed, Peping slowly adjusted to those changes. Father talked to Peping one morning. Their conversation made Peping realize that he remained to be Lolo’s favorite despite the latter’s old age, loss of mental faculties, and death.
Introduction
The story captivates readers from the start. It appeals on an emotional way. Readers are reminded of their young selves and their doting grandparents. The author introduces early the main points he wants to convey: old age and loss of mental faculties. As a doctor, Gatmaitan is credible in enumerating signs of losing mental faculties in old age.
Discussion
In the story, the author features Peping and Lolo as the central characters. What the author wrote about them are authentic and relatable. I have felt what Peping felt throughout the story — bliss, confusion, sadness, and contentment. The lines uttered by the characters are authentic and meaningful.
The scene is pictured early enough in the story. I have not imagined any other setting aside from the home and the backyard.
The story goes well from beginning to end. It is heart-warming and shows the Filipinos’ love for family.
The time span is suitable for the story. The ending is on point and does not need any explanation.
The title Secrets with Lolo is more meaningful after reading the story.
Conclusion
I like the book. It stirs something in me. The author succeeds to put his message across. The story subtly makes readers appreciate more their families. The story’s appeal on emotion is helped by Doctolero’s beautiful artwork peppered with hearts. There is no doubt why Gatmaitan’s work received Second Prize (Maikling Kathang Pambata 2000) by the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for LITERATURE.
